I was born and raised in Kathmandu. I am from Newar
community and from my surname we were farmers. My
parents still continue this profession, working in the fields.
My grandfather was a guru of traditional Newari drums.
So since my childhood I have been interested in art,
whether it was music, singing, drawing or painting. After
completing school I studied fine art. I graduated from
Kathmandu University Center for Art and Design taking
painting as my major. I am the first person in my family
to study Fine Art. My family was very supportive during
my time at University.
I usually paint experimenting with the different subject
matters that interest me. I start by taking photographs
and do the paintings from those photos.
It is a great pleasure to me to be one of the first two
artists to do a residency at KCAC. It is a great opportunity,
having graduated so recently, to be able to have a studio at
the centre. It is very helpful to my working and learning experience
to be able to use the library, film club and artists visit frequently. It
will also help our artistic skills and knowledge of the different world
and culture for further art practice. We are grateful to KCAC for selecting
us to work at center.
On the KCAC residency program, despite being a vegetarian, I am
focusing on a series of paintings about slaughter. I cannot tell why
I am interested on this idea right now but in the beginning I was
searching for disturbing images to paint and I found the slaughtered
body interesting and useful for my ideas. It is too early to talk about
it as I am still researching this project. I hope it will be challenging
and interesting to work on.
